It is the headquarters of a municipality with 82.21 km² of area and with 63 408 inhabitants (2011). The city expanded to the south to Vila do Conde, forming an urban agglomeration of 100 000 inhabitants, the seventh largest in Portugal and the third in the North. It is one of the urban centers of northern Portugal and centrality of the neighboring municipalities of Vila do Conde and Esposende. The first populations settled on their territory between four and six thousand years ago. Around 900 BC, instability in the region led to the founding of a walled city, the Cividade de Terroso, which developed maritime trade routes with the civilizations of classical antiquity. The modern Póvoa de Varzim emerged after the conquest of cividade by the Roman Republic around 138 BC, fishing and fish processing units developed shortly thereafter, constituting the basis of the local economy.
