It is the headquarters of a municipality with 82.21 km² of area and with 63 408 inhabitants (2011). The city expanded to the south to Vila do Conde, forming an urban agglomeration of 100 000 inhabitants, the seventh largest in Portugal and the third in the North. It is one of the urban centers of northern Portugal and centrality of the neighboring municipalities of Vila do Conde and Esposende. The first populations settled on their territory between four and six thousand years ago. Around 900 BC, instability in the region led to the founding of a walled city, the Cividade de Terroso, which developed maritime trade routes with the civilizations of classical antiquity. The modern Póvoa de Varzim emerged after the conquest of cividade by the Roman Republic around 138 BC, fishing and fish processing units developed shortly thereafter, constituting the basis of the local economy. By the 11th century, the fishing industry and fertile fields formed the basis of a feudal landlord and Varzim was fiercely disputed among local and regional lords, the first kings of Portugal, which led to the creation of the municipality in 1308 and was subjected to medieval monastery power a few years later. The importance of Póvoa de Varzim reemerged with the Age of Discovery due to the competence and wealth of its shipbuilders and sailors, who traded around the world on complex trade routes. By the 17th century, the fish processing industry took on new breath and, some time later, Póvoa became the dominant fishing port in northern Portugal. The city of Póvoa de Varzim is a renowned seaside town for three centuries, the most popular in northern Portugal, which instituted an influential literary culture and patronage in music and theater. It is one of the few legal gambling areas in Portugal and has significant textile and food industries. The city maintains its own cultural identity, rich fishing cuisine and ancient traditions such as poveiras acronyms, the agricultural technique of the masseiras and parties. Source: Wikipedia
